Biography:
John Milton Cone of Independence was a graduate of Iowa State University and the University of California-Berkley. He served in the Peace Corps in South America for two years before he was drafted into the Army. SGT Cone began his tour in Vietnam in September 1969. He was fatally wounded two months later on November 17 when his unit encountered an enemy force near the Cambodian border. A funeral was held at the First United Presbyterian Church and his body was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery, both located in Independence.
