Jon Richard Winger

Jon Richard Winger of Cedar Rapids was a standout wrestler at Jefferson High School. His wrestling team won the state title in 1962. He graduated in 1964 then attended Parsons College in Fairfield for two years. Winger was drafted into the Army on July 24, 1967 and arrived in Vietnam in January of the following year. He was wounded in March 1968 and temporarily hospitalized. SGT Winger was killed a week after returning to active duty on June 19, 1968 from wounds he suffered while engaged in a firefight near Saigon. He was buried at Cedar Memorial Park in Cedar Rapids.
