Biography:
Kenneth Allen McClain was raised in Exira in rural Audubon County. After graduating high school he joined the Marine Corps and trained as a wireman. LCPL McClain was sent to Southeast Asia in the February 1968 and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 27th Marines, in the 1st Marine Division. Two months into his deployment LCPL McClain was killed just outside of Hue City in the Thua Thien Province, South Vietnam. His death occurred on April 17, 1968 during an enemy mortar attack on the Battalion Command Post. He sustained multiple fragmentation wounds to his head and body. Three other Marines were killed in the bombardment. The 22-year-old’s body was returned to Iowa and buried in his hometown at the Exira Cemetery.
