Biography:
Kenneth Harry Heitmann was raised near Victor, IA. Growing up he was active at Saint Paul’s Evangelical and Reformed Church, where he was confirmed in 1959. In addition to his church activities, he was highly involved with the “Hartford Hillbillies” 4-H Club and his school choir. He graduated from HLV High School in 1963, where he earned the school’s Citizenship Award. He continued his education at Iowa State University, earning a B.S. in Agricultural Business in 1967 and an M.A. in Agricultural Economics in 1969. A month later, Heitmann enlisted in the Army. He attended Basic Training at Fort Polk, LA, and Officer Training at Fort Benning, GA, after which he became a Sergeant. SGT Heitmann began serving as an infantryman with the Americal Division on February 5, 1970. On March 25, 1970, SGT Heitmann was killed by hostile fire during Operation Frederick Hill in the Quang Tin Province of South Vietnam. Memorial services were held at Trinity United Church of Christ in Sumner and his body was buried at Genoa Bluff Cemetery in nearby Marengo.
