Biography:
Kenneth Jurgens grew up on a farm near Sand Springs in Delaware County. After graduating from St. Paul High School in Worthington, he worked for a time before being drafted into the Army in May 1966. He spent a three day Christmas leave at his parent’s home in 1966 prior to departing for Vietnam. On his arrival he joined the 2nd Battalion, 47th Infantry during Operation Junction City north of Saigon. He was killed March 18, 1967 by a sniper while on patrol near Binh Long, the first soldier from the Monticello area to die in the war. CPL Jurgens was buried in St. Paul’s Cemetery in Worthington.
