Biography:
La Roy Frederich Roth was raised in Sac County in the small town of Wall Lake. He was drafted by the Army and trained as an infantryman. Upon arriving in Vietnam in September 1969 SP4 Roth was assigned to Company K with the 75th Ranger Regiment in the Army’s 4th Infantry Division. His unit performed long range patrols and reconnaissance missions deep into enemy territory. SP4 Roth and two other rangers were killed on January 7, 1970 in the Pleiku Province, South Vietnam when their position was attacked by an enemy force. He had served four months of his tour at the time of his death. The 20-year-old Iowan’s body was returned to the United States and buried in his hometown at the Wall Lake Cemetery.
