Biography:
Larry Albert Dahms was a 1965 graduate of Garwin High School in Tama County. Before joining the service he worked for the Kellogg’s Electric Company. Dahms studied at Iowa State University working towards a degree in engineering. He planned to return to ISU and finish his education after serving in the military. He joined the Navy in May 1970 and trained as a Seabee. He was sent to South Vietnam in October 1970 as a construction electrician. On November 17, 1970, while working on a communication tower, Dahms’ safety belt broke and he fell to his death in the Bien Hoa Province. The 23-year-old’s body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Marshalltown. Dahms was engaged to be married at the time of his death.
