Biography:
Ackley native Larry Charles Schwebke was killed on May 2, 1968 in South Vietnam. He was drafted by the Army and started his tour in December 1967. He specialized in light infantry and served with the 196th Infantry Brigade with the Americal Division. He was killed when his unit encountered an enemy force near Nhi Ha, north of the Cua Viet River in the Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. Sixteen Americans were killed during the engagement. SP4 Schwebke was 22 years old at the time of his death and he left behind a young wife. A memorial service was held at the Immanuel Lutheran Church and his body was buried at the North Lawn Cemetery, both in Iowa Falls.
