Biography:
Larry Dean Borschel grew up in Iowa Falls and graduated from the local high school in the class of 1963. As a young man he worked as a carryout boy in the meat department of the Royal Blue Store. After graduation Borschel joined the Marine Corps inspired by stories of his grandfather’s service in WWI. After training, LCPL Borschel received a furlough home in February 1965 before being deployed to South Vietnam. He was assigned to the 3rd Marine Division as a radio operator. His unit was ordered to participate in Operation Harvest Moon, the first major Marine operation of the war. On December 9, 1965 he was killed by a wound to the abdomen sustained by an enemy missile. In addition to LCPL Borschel 10 other marines were killed during the December 9th battle, including Iowa native PFC Weber. LCPL Borschel’s body was returned to Iowa Falls and buried at the local Northlawn Memory Gardens.
