Biography:
Larry D. Jameson was born and went to school in the small community of Cantril in Van Buren County. After high school in 1953 he enlisted in the Marine Corps and trained as a helicopter mechanic and later crew chief with the 1st Marine Air Wing in Vietnam. On October 8 two Marine helicopters went in search of a downed Air Force crew 40 miles west of Da Nang in Quang Nam Province. Upon arriving at the site the two UH-34D airframes took hostile fire, crashed into each other and went down. Three Navy medics and nine Marine crew members were killed including Sergeant Jameson, the largest personnel American loss in Vietnam to that date.
