Biography:
Larry Joseph Nehring was raised in Des Moines and graduated from Dowling Catholic High School in the class of 1965. He was the son of a military aid to Iowa Governor Harold Hughes. The younger Nehring joined the Marine Corps in the fall after graduating high school. He was a member of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 26th Marines with the 3rd Marine Division. LCPL Nehring was sent to South Vietnam in the summer of 1966. He was killed on January 9, 1967 during Operation Chinook. He was fatally wounded by a sniper’s bullet to the neck. LCPL Nehring was 20 years old at the time of his death. His body was buried at the Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.
