Biography:
Larry William Brendel graduated from Muscatine High School in the class of 1964. As a young man, Brendel enjoyed hunting and the outdoors. He worked for a local grain processing company before being draft into the Army in January 1967. SP4 Brendel was deployed to Vietnam in July 1966 with the 1st Infantry Division. He was credited with being in several major engagements as a radio-telephone operator. In February 1967 SP4 Brendel was wounded by enemy small-arms fire during battle, he later died from his injuries in an Army hospital. He was the first casualty from Muscatine County. A funeral was held at the Zion Lutheran Church and his body was buried at the Greenwood Cemetery, both in Muscatine.
