Biography:
Leonard Lloyd McQuinn Jr. was born in Omaha but grew up and attended school across the river in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in September 1968 at an Omaha recruiting office. He arrived in Vietnam and was assigned as a rifleman with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. The company was participating in Operation Napa in the vicinity of Phu Thu, 10 kilometers northwest of the Tam Ky, Quang Tin Province. While Bravo Company was in a night defensive position, the perimeter was probed by a hostile force with explosive devices. PFC McQuinn died during the night as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds along with another Marine. He was single and served his country in the U. S. Marines for almost a year. The 19-year-old’s body was returned to Iowa and was buried in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Council Bluffs. Three years later his younger brother Byron McQuinn was killed while serving in Vietnam.
