Biography:
Leroy Warren Poppema of Hospers enlisted in the Navy in January 1967. He received training at San Diego, CA to become a hospital corpsman and was assigned to a Marine Corps unit. Hospitalman (HN) Poppema started his tour in Vietnam on April 15, 1968. After only being on active duty for a month, he died from fragmentation wounds he suffered in Quang Nam Province during Operation Allen Brook. The operation was a Marine offensive on a VC stronghold outside of Danang, 172 Americans were killed during Allen Brook. A funeral service took place at the Christian Reformed Church located in Hospers. His body was buried at Hospers Memorial Cemetery. He left behind a fiancé.
