Biography:
Lloyd Cyrus Wohlford Jr. grew up in Decorah and graduated from the Thomas Robert High School in the class of 1965. Wohlford was drafted into the Army in August 1966. After training, he started his tour in Vietnam in February 1967. PFC Wohlford was a combat engineer with the 1st Infantry Division, nicknamed the “Big Red 1.” His unit was participating in Operation Billings when he was killed on the night of June 17, 1967. PFC Wohlford was on a nighttime defensive perimeter assignment when he engaged the enemy and was fatally wounded. The 20-year-old’s body was returned to Decorah and buried at the Phelps Cemetery.
