Biography:
Clayton County native Louis Lloyd Zittergruen grew up in Monona. He was drafted by the Army then sent to South Vietnam in January 1970. He served as an infantryman in the 11th Infantry, Americal Division. On July 17, 1970, he was aboard an M-113 armored personnel carrier on a search and clear mission about 7 miles northwest of Quang Ngai Airfield when it detonated a concealed 250 lbs. bomb. The blast killed six soldiers, including PFC Zittergruen, and wounded nine. The 21-year-old Iowan’s body was returned to the United States and buried in the Monona City Cemetery.
