Biography:
Lynn Leroy Miles grew up in Des Moines and graduated from East High School in the class of 1964. As a young man he attended Willard Grade School and Woodrow Wilson Junior High School. He enlisted in the Army shortly after graduation. His first deployment was in Korea, where he served for one year. Miles briefly was stationed at Fort Riley, KS before he was assigned to South Vietnam in December 1966. SGT Miles served with the 9th Infantry Division in the Phuoc Tuy Province. His unit was participating in Operation Colby when he was killed on January 29, 1967. SGT Miles had been in Vietnam less than two months. He died from multiple fragmentation wounds inflicted by enemy mortar fire. The 20-year-old’s body was buried at the Highland Memory Gardens in Des Moines.
