Biography:
Marc Gregory Van Dalsem spent most of his life in Carlisle. He graduated from Carlisle Senior High School in the class of 1966. Van Dalsem was drafted by the Army in the fall after graduation. He was inducted out of Des Moines and was sent to Vietnam in March 1968. PFC Van Dalsem was an engineer and specialized in quarries. On July 22, 1968 his convoy was ambushed in the Binh Dinh, Province by enemy forces. He received multiple fatal fragmentation wounds. Eleven other Americans died during the ambush, along with two South Vietnamese. The 21-year-old’s body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Carlisle Cemetery. He left behind a wife an infant daughter.
