Biography:
Mark Galen Stickels was born in the Richland Township in Adair County. At a young age his family moved to Afton where Stickels grew up. He graduated from East Union Community High School in the class of 1965. He joined the Army the October following graduation. SGT Stickels arrived in South Vietnam in June 1967 with the 101st Airborne Division. On April 4, 1968 SGT Stickels was killed by machinegun wounds during a reconnaissance mission in the Thua Thien Province. He planned to be married upon returning home in June 1968. The 21-year-old’s body was buried at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Afton.
