Biography:
Martin Lee Bennett grew up in rural Hamburg and graduated from Hamburg High School in 1966. He was active in scouting, FFA and 4-H. In his high school interview he stated he was enlisting in the Air Force. After training to repair damaged air frames, he was sent to Vietnam in February 1968 as a maintenance officer with the 100th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing of the Strategic Air Command. On February 28th the Bien Hoa Air Base was attacked and SGT Bennett’s bunker took a direct rocket hit. He died at an evacuation hospital. He was the first Hamburg native to die in the Vietnam conflict and is buried in the Mt. Olive Cemetery in Hamburg.
