Biography:
Marvin Edward Gordon was born in Iowa City and raised in rural Monroe County in the town of Lovilia. As a child he attended Lovilia Elementary School and enjoyed playing sports. He graduated from Albia Community High School in the class of 1966. His classmates referred to Gordon as “Dusty.” After graduating from high school he enlisted in the Marines Corps at the Des Moines Recruiting Office. He completed his training and was sent to South Vietnam in November 1966. The young Iowan died on September 17, 1967 in the Quang Tri Province. He died from f asphyxiation, due to carbon monoxide. He was resting near an amtrac vehicle when he fell asleep. Lance Corporal Gordon’s body was returned to the United States and buried at the Rock Island National Cemetery in Illinois. Gordon was 19 years old at the time of his death.
