Biography:
Melvin Thompson grew up in Fonda Iowa, graduating as class salutatorian for Fonda High School in 1966. He worked in Spirit Lake until he was drafted in January 1968. Thompson was an infantryman with the 4th Battalion, 11th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. He was killed November 21, 1968 when he detonated a booby trap while on patrol in Quang Ngai Province. CPL Thompson was buried in Cedar Cemetery in Fonda.
