Biography:
SGT Michael Eugene Mullen was born in Des Moines, attended La Porte City grade school, and graduated from Don Bosco High School in Gilbertville. He attended Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Missouri, where he graduated with honors in June of 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry. While working on a doctorate degree in chemistry at Missouri University he was drafted into the Army. He completed his training at Camp Polk, LA and at Fort Benning, GA. Mullen was deployed to Vietnam in September 1969. SGT Mullen was killed in a friendly fire incident during an artillery bombardment on February 18, 1970. The story of his life and death is told in the book "Friendly Fire" by C.D.B. Bryan.
