Biography:
Huxley native Michael Evan Antill graduated Ballard Community High School in the class of 1963. After school he worked at his father’s business, Hap’s Auto Supply in Ames. Antill was drafted by the Army in the spring of 1967. He trained to be an infantryman and was sent to South Vietnam in December of the same year. PFC Antill was assigned to Company C, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry with the 25th Infantry Division. Less than a month into his tour PFC Antill was killed in action on December 28, 1967. The 22-year-old was killed when a friendly grenade exploded near his position on a listening post. The grenade inflicted multiple fatal metal fragmentation wounds to his back and head. His body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Palestine Cemetery in Huxley. PFC Antill’s name was added to the Iowa State University’s Gold Star Hall in the Memorial Union in 2008.
