Biography:
Michael K. Lewis grew up in Lake City in Calhoun County. After graduating from Lake City High School in 1964, he worked for a time before entering the Army in early 1968. After training, he joined the 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry in Kien Hoa Province in December 1968. He was a boat operator for the “River Raiders,” the Mobile Riverine Force. On June 13, while leading a reconnaissance mission on the Ben Tre River, two of his men were wounded by an enemy ambush. Sergeant Lewis worked to clear terrain for a medevac pickup, all the time recognizing the area was hazardous with land mines. He was killed when a second device exploded. At his funeral, his family was presented with seventeen posthumous awards including a Silver Star. He was buried in the Lake City Cemetery.
