Biography:
Michael Linn Lytle was born on January 19, 1948 and was a 1966 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. After high school he attended Drake University for two years where he was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity. Lytle was also an active member in the First Christian Church of Oskaloosa. Lytle was drafted into the Army in early 1969 and became an Army Ranger. He was assigned to Company L, 75th Ranger Regiment in the 101st Airborne Division. His tour in Vietnam began in August 1969. Two months after arriving in Vietnam PFC Lytle was on a combat operation when his unit encountered hostile forces. PFC Lytle was crossing a stream to evade the enemy. He fell into the water and drowned. PFC Lytle’s parents along with his brother, set up a scholarship at Drake University in honor of the fallen soldier. Memorial services were held at First Christian Church in Oskaloosa. PFC Lytle is buried at the Madison Cemetery in Mahaska County.
