Biography:
Growing up in Sumner, Myron Jerome Poock was an active member of 4-H and commonly on the academic honor roll. He graduated high school in 1961 and earned a scholarship to Iowa State University. There he was active in the Army ROTC program and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in May 1965. Two years later he was sent to Vietnam in August 1967. Captain Poock died on July 22, 1968 in an Army Hospital in South Vietnam, where he had been taken after being seriously wounded the day before. His wounds were incurred by a grenade detonation. Poock’s memorial service was held at Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sumner.
