Biography:
Nicholas Richard Alexander was born and raised in rural Wesley in Kossuth County. He graduated from the Titonka High School in the class of 1966. Alexander joined the Army in December 1966. He was sent to Vietnam in January 1968. He served as a Huey Helicopter pilot for the 1st Aviation Brigade. Warrant Officer Alexander took a rest and relaxation trip to Hawaii in August 1968, where he spent a week with his wife. He was killed on November 27, 1968 while supporting South Vietnamese troops outside of Tay Ninh. His chopper was hit by automatic machinegun fire and crashed. Three other soldiers died in the crash. His body was returned to Iowa and buried in the East Lawn Cemetery in Algona. He was 21 years old at the time of his death and was posthumously promoted to Chief Warrant Officer.
