Biography:
Norbert Gene Simmons was born on August 8, 1941 in Davenport. He graduated from Davenport High school in the class of 1960 and enlisted in the Marine Corps following graduation. SGT Simmons’ unit was credited with repairing a war damaged well for a small village in South Vietnam. SGT Simmons was hit in the chest by small arms fire while on a patrol with his unit in the Hoi An region. He died while being evacuated from the field by helicopter on June 15, 1966. SGT Simmons was survived by his wife and 2 daughters who were living in the Philippine Islands at the time of his death. He was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Davenport.
