Biography:
Patrick Maurice Dillon of Belmond, IA spent his entire career in the Army. He initially enlisted in September of 1948, completing basic training at Fort Benning, GA. He qualified as a paratrooper and gilderman and served in Germany and Korea. Dillon graduated from the Seventh Army’s Non-Commissioned Officer Academy in Munich in 1957, eventually earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. SSG Dillon began his second tour in South Vietnam in May, 1969. He served as an infantryman in Military Assistance Command Advisory Team 32 near the Cambodian border. On December 18, 1969, SSG Dillon was killed in Quang Duc Province, South Vietnam after an explosive hidden in a bush detonated while the bush was being burnt. A funeral mass was held on December 29 at Saint Francis Catholic Church in Belmond. After 21 years of military service, his body was buried at Saint Francis Cemetery in Belmond.
