Biography:
Slater native Philip Boyd Jones graduated from Ballard High School in 1965 and attended the University of Northern Iowa before enlisting in the Marine Corps in 1966. Jones specialized in the infantry. In 1968 he completed an entire one year tour in Vietnam. After a short time back in the United States he returned to Vietnam in January 1969 for a second tour. He was serving as a platoon leader with an amphibious force in the 1st Marine Division. Less than a month into his second tour 2LT Jones was killed in action on January 28, 1969. His fatal injuries were sustained during a firefight with the enemy near Hill 55 in the Quang Nam Province during Operation Linn River. 2LT Jones was 21 years old at the time of his death. His body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Slater Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in Story County. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for heroism.
