Biography:
Philip Duane Cheek was raised in Davenport and served in the Army Reserves. PFC Cheek worked as a Heavy Vehicle Driver when he was sent to South Vietnam in August 1970. He served for the 54th Ordinance Company in the Army’s Support Command in Saigon. The 19-year-old soldier died on July 18, 1971 from injuries that were described by the military as a “non-hostile, accidental self-destruction.” His remains were returned to the United States and buried at the Rock Island National Cemetery just across the Mississippi River from his hometown of Davenport.
