Biography:
Woodbury County native Philip Lou Baker grew up in rural Correctionville. He served originally in the Army National Guard until he was transferred to active duty. Baker was a medical non-commissioned officer and was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division. His 12 month tour in Vietnam started in January 1969 and he was stationed in the Kontum Province. SP4 Baker was killed on March 3, 1969 while participating in Operation Wayne Grey. The battle took place near Hill 947 in the Plei Trap Valley. In the days before Baker was killed, another company was wiped-out by the enemy. Baker’s unit was assigned to rescue survivors and locate the hidden enemy forces. Along with Baker, 22 other Americans were killed during the engagement on March 3. The 20-year-old Iowan was buried at the Rock Branch Cemetery in Correctionville.
