Biography:
Randall Lee Shackelford was raised in Coggon and graduated from Coggon High School in the class of 1967. As a young man, Shackelford was a multi-sport athlete, an Eagle Scout, and an active member of the First Christian Church. He entered the Marine Corps in June after graduating high school. In December 1968, after completing advanced infantry training, LCPL Shackelford began his tour in Vietnam as a rifleman with the 1st Marine Division. He received fragmentation wounds to his head and body sustained from a rocket attack on March 9, 1969 near An Hoa, South Vietnam. LCPL Shackelford expired four days later at a hospital in Japan. The city of Coggan, named their high school football stadium in his honor. His parents buried their only son in the Coggon Cemetery. He was 20 years old at the time of his death.
