Biography:
Raphael Johnny Rendon was born in Waterloo in 1948 and grew up in Washburn. He graduated from Orange High School in 1966 and was employed by Wayne Engineering Company in Cedar Falls before he joined the Marine Corps in August 1967. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Raymond, the Boy Scouts, and the local Pee Wee Baseball League. LCPL Rendon received a Purple Heart in December 1967 for wounds received in a combat engagement while in Vietnam. Later on Sunday, July 28, 1968 LCPL Rendon was killed in action while on a patrol in the Quang Nam Province. A memorial service was held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and he was buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Waterloo.
