Biography:
CPL Richard Alan Ballheim attended La Porte City Community High School and graduated in the class of 1965. He was active in football, basketball, track, and was president of his senior class. He entered the service in July 1967 and completed his training at Fort Campbell, KY and Fort Polk, LA before arriving in Vietnam in December 1967. Ballheim died of wounds received while unloading a truck when a hostile mortar exploded nearby on January 28, 1968. His body was buried in the Westview Cemetery in La Porte City.
