Biography:
Richard Allan Havlik graduated from the Immaculate Conception High School in rural Elma of Howard County. He lived and worked in Cedar Rapids throughout 1968. Havlik was drafted by the Army in February 1969 and then sent to South Vietnam four months later. PFC Havlik served in the 101st Airborne Division as an infantryman. He was killed in action less than one month into his 12-month tour. On July 19, 1969 PFC Havlik sustained fatal gunshot wounds inflicted by the enemy. The 20-year-old’s body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Howard County.
