Biography:
Richard George Liewar graduated Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines in the class of 1965. He attended Drake University for two years before he was drafted by the Army. He trained as an infantryman and was assigned to the 9th Infantry Division. SP4 Liewar started a 12 month tour in Vietnam on September 25, 1967. With less than two months before returning to the United States SP4 Liewar was killed in action. On July 14, 1968 he sustained multiple fragmentation wounds from an enemy mortar attack while his unit was on a military operation. SP4 Liewar was admitted into a hospital where he expired a few hours later. He was 21 years old at the time of his death. His body was returned to Des Moines and buried at the Glendale Cemetery by his parents and five siblings.
