Biography:
Richard (Dick) Jon Lockwood was raised in Cedar Rapids and graduated from Regis Catholic High School. He was a two sport athlete during high school. He earned the honor of all-Cedar Rapids football quarterback his senior year and also was an accomplished basketball player. Lockwood went on to attend both Creighton University and the University of Iowa before joining the Army in July 1969. He planned to return to classes at the University of Iowa upon completing his service. After training, SSGT Lockwood was sent to Vietnam in August 1970 as an infantryman with the 101st Airborne Division. Throughout his tour he served in the I Corps near Khe Sanh. On April 6, 1970, only days before being able to return home, SSGT Lockwood was killed by enemy fire during combat. A memorial was held at the All Saints Catholic Church and his body was buried at Cedar Memorial Cemetery.
