Biography:
Richard Lee Ayers was raised in Waterloo before joining the United States Air Force. His two-man F-4 Phantom was shot down on April 16, 1970 along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Vietnam. Ayers served as a weapons systems officer from the 12th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron based at Tan Son Nhut Airbase in Saigon, South Vietnam. Richard Lee Ayers’ remains were not recovered from the crash site.
