Biography:
Richard Lemoyne Murray was raised in Tipton before joining the Marine Corps. CPL Murray served for three years and served as an ammunition technician. He was deployed to Southeast Asia at the height of the 1968 Tet Offensive and was stationed in Danang. On April 10, 1968, while working with the ammo supply, there was an accidental explosion. CPL Murray was killed from fragmentation wounds inflicted during the accident. Three other Marines died during the explosion, including PFC Reidy of Independence. The 21-year-old’s body was returned to Iowa and buried in the West Branch Cemetery.
