Biography:
Richard T. Flattery Jr. was from Fort Dodge in Webster County. As an adult, Flattery joined the U.S. Army Reserve and eventually earned the rank of First Lieutenant. 1LT Flattery began his tour in Vietnam in March 1968. He served as a Tank Unit Commander in the First Cavalry Division. On May 10, 1968 1LT Flattery was killed in action during Operation Jeb Stuart III near Hue City, South Vietnam. A funeral mass was held on June 3, 1968, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Fort Dodge. Members of the 974th Personnel Service Company of the Army Reserve served as pallbearers. His body was buried in Corpus Christi Cemetery in Fort Dodge.
