Biography:
Robert “Shorty” Edwin Ewoldt graduated from Algona High School in the class of 1964. While in school he was a standout wrestler, finishing second during the State of Iowa Wrestling Meet. Ewoldt joined the Marine Corps three months after graduating high school. SGT Ewoldt completed two tours in Vietnam, the first from 1965 to 1966 and his second from 1966 to 1967. After 30 days at home, SGT Ewoldt volunteered for a third tour. He arrived for the third time in Vietnam on October 4, 1967. He was serving as a cook with 1st Platoon, Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was stationed in I Corps in the Quang Nam Province when the enemy attacked during the 1968 Tet Offensive. While on a patrol on February 6, 1968 SGT Ewoldt was killed by enemy small arms fire. He was trying to save fellow Marines when he was killed. The 22-year-old’s body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Saint Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Whittemore.
