Biography:
Robert George Harvey was born and raised in Washington County. As a youth he participated in Boy Scouts and swam for the local YMCA. During high school he was involved with football, wrestling, and track. Harvey graduated in the class of 1967 from Washington High School. He joined the Marine Corps during the summer after graduation. After training, PFC Harvey started his tour in Vietnam in January 1968 as a rifleman with the Combined Action Group (CAG). PFC Harvey was killed on August 10, 1968 from shrapnel wounds sustained from an enemy explosive device he encountered while on patrol in the Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam. He was the fourth serviceman killed from Washington County during the Vietnam War. The 20-year-old’s body was buried at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa.
