Biography:
Robert John Podnar was born in Epworth and raised in Reinbeck. He was employed at John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo before enlisting in the Army. SP4 Podnar began his tour in Vietnam in December 1969. He was killed six months later on June 5, 1970 by enemy forces while on guard duty at a petroleum storage area in Binh Dinh Province. A funeral service was held at Saint Patrick’s Church and his body was buried with full military rites at Mount Calvary Cemetery located in Dubuque. He left behind a wife, son, and two daughters.
