Biography:
Robert “Clutch” John Schares of Jesup was a graduate of Don Bosco High School in the class of 1966. As a youth he enjoyed playing the guitar and was part of a band named The Lyres in high school. Additionally Schares participated in 4-H. After graduation he attended Briar Cliff University before he enlisted in the Army. He was sent to Vietnam in July 1969. PFC Schares was wounded by enemy mortar fire while involved in a battle near Bien Hoa. He was initially admitted into a military hospital but succumbed to his wounds on November 18, 1969. A funeral service and burial took place at Saint Athanasius Church and Cemetery in Jesup. His Don Bosco classmates established a scholarship fund in his honor that has continued to award scholarships to students.
