Biography:
Robert Joseph Shannon graduated Clinton High School in the class of 1968. He was drafted by the Army in July 1969 and was sent to South Vietnam in December of the same year. Specialist Shannon died on April 30, 1970 when his artillery position in the Thua Thien Province was attacked by an enemy force. He sustained multiple fatal fragmentation wounds. Shannon was posthumously promoted to sergeant. He was 20 years old at the time of his death. Shannon’s body was returned to Iowa and buried in the Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Clinton.
