Biography:
Robert Wilfred McDonald grew up in Knoxville and graduated from the local community school district in the class of 1965. He joined the Army and achieved the rank of Specialist Four. SP4 McDonald started a 12 month tour in Vietnam on December 9, 1969. He was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry, in the 198th Infantry Brigade Americal Division. He was killed while on an operation east of the Binh Son Airfield in the Quang Ngai Province, South Vietnam. He died on June 16, 1970 when an enemy booby trap detonated. He was 22 years old at the time of his death. The young Iowan’s body was returned to Knoxville and buried at the Greenwood Cemetery.
