Biography:
Roger Allen Hites graduated from Clarksville Community High School in the class of 1962. As a young man he played halfback for his school football team and was a sprinter on the track team. He was a member of the local Lutheran church. He enlisted in the Army in November 1964. He completed his training at Fort Leonard Wood. He then was stationed with Company B, 3rd Missile Battalion, 50th Artillery in Farmington, MN. SP4 Hites deployed to South Vietnam in March 1966 as an ordnance supply and part specialist. He served in the Army for over two years before he was killed. On January 15, 1967 SP4 Hites volunteered to be part of a rescue mission aboard a CH-47 Chinook helicopter. During the flight the aircraft experienced an unexplained rotor failure and the chopper broke apart midair. The resulting crash killed all 9 occupants including SP4 Hites. The 23-year-old’s body was buried at the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville.
