Biography:
Harrison County native Roger C. McCord grew up in Dunlap. He briefly attended college, dropped out, and was drafted into the U.S. Army. He entered the service in April 1968, trained as an infantryman, and achieved the rank of Private First Class. The young McCord was sent to South Vietnam in September 1968 and assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry in the 25th Infantry Division. Three months into his deployment PFC McCord was killed in action. He died of wounds sustained during a firefight with the enemy in the Hau Nghia Province. He was 21 years old at the time of his death. His remains were returned to Iowa and buried at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap. He was posthumously promoted to Corporal by the Army.
